This famous British artist was renown for his watercolor and gouache paintings of early twentieth century pure-bred dogs, especially gundogs, from the kennels of the British aristocracy. Lorna, Countess Howe, whose dual purpose Banchory Labradors are on the pedigrees of virtually all present day field and bench lines, commissioned him to paint her entire kennel. His representation of working retrievers in their natural settings, and the fidelity with which he portrayed both the Labrador breed and the unique characteristics of individual dogs, give us the best visual representation of early Labradors at a time when most kennels participated in both bench and field activities.
